This optional lecture course, questioning the Middle-East area as a whole, aims at giving a quick introduction to the major political, social and economic stakes shaking the region nowadays, considering it as well from a historical perspective. Exploring both the so-called "nature" of the Middle-eastern states, and the way people live and make a living in these countries, while paying attention to their contemporary ways of protesting and mobilising, this course plans to question the very "Middle-East" idiom.

The course will be delivered by Mohamed Slim Ben Youssef (Université de Lille).

The training content is based on two handbooks: Introduction aux mondes arabes en (r)évolution, written by A. Boutaleb, M. Vannetzel et A. Allal (De Boeck Supérieur, 2018), and Sociologie politique du Moyen-Orient, written by H. Bozarslan (La Découverte, 2011).
