This course introduces students to the evolution, functioning and current objectives of the European Union’s external actions, with a specific focus on the fields of security, peace building, aid and migration. The course also familiarises students with the main academic and policy debates about the EU’s external actions. The first two sessions provide an overview of the main academic approaches to the EU foreign policy, its evolution since the 1950s and its main actors. The core sessions are organized around several policy areas and three case study (Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sahel). The concluding sessions examine the current place of Europe and European actors in the global arena and transnational fields.
