This course focuses on peace operations. It adopts a critical and sociological approach to the topic of international peacebuilding and resolution of recent conflicts.

In doing so, the course also familiarises students with the main academic and policy debates about peace operations. The first two sessions provide an overview of the actors, institutions and processes of peace operations as well as the main academic approaches to peacebuilding. The core sessions are organized around the different practices and operations of peace processes (negotiation, peace-making, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, etc.). These sessions deal with some contexts in depth: Burundi, Zaïre/Democratic Republic of Congo, Timor-Leste. The concluding sessions examine several dilemmas that peace operations face.
