This is an introduction to one of the two branches of linguistics that deals with (linguistic) meaning. Semantics deals with those aspects of meaning that are encoded in grammar and the lexicon. Pragmatics — the subject matter of this course — deals with aspects of meaning that are, to some extent at least, dependent on the context/situation of utterance.
