The course surveys the principal features of English legal institutions and doctrines from the Norman conquest to Modern Times, offering insights into the development of public law, the law of obligations, procedural law, and legal education. One class will address the spread of the common law in the US, and focus on the case Marbury vs Madison (1803). In the last two classes, the analysis of the Brexit rulings wil enable the students to see how historical principles of English constitutional law have been used to deal with the present-day most important and controversial topic in British politics.
